INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Therapy at its best combines both insight and action.
Understanding how we got here matters — but it is not enough. Taking steps, both in life and during therapy to heal and make changes is essential for an effective and satisfying outcome.
For these reasons, my approach to therapy combines the depth orientation of psychodynamic / mindfulness-related with the action oriented aspects of cognitive-behavioral, behavioral and internal focusing techniques. This combination allows us to move quickly toward real change rather than simply developing a more articulate understanding of the problem.
Having worked with people in all strata of society, from Physicians and C-Suite executives to people dealt an extremely bad hand in life, I have seen the roots of distress - and recovery - in all facets and periods of life. This work has shown me that many people, although successful in work or school, may still endure substantial distress around relationships, mood or feelings of inner discontent or agitation. I work with clients as well as couples to quickly identify the roots of these difficulties and bring their lives into greater balance.
COUPLES THERAPY
My work with couples is a passion born as a Family Court psychologist, witnessing the emotional carnage of marital and family breakdown.
I have spent much of my career as a psychologist in the busiest divorce court in Massachusetts, watching couples and their children go through some of the most painful experiences a family can endure. I have sat with parents who arrived at that point carrying years of unresolved injuries that might have healed with the right help at the right time. That has given me both a deep passion for couples work and a clear-eyed understanding of what is at stake when unresolved injuries go unaddressed.
And given how effective this work can be when done well, nothing in my clinical work gives me more satisfaction than watching a couple that came in defensive and distant begin to actually hear each other — sometimes for the first time in years. The de-escalation, the moment someone finally feels understood, the slow rebuilding of trust after a serious betrayal — this is genuinely transformative work, and it is often far more achievable than couples expect when they first walk through the door.
COPING WITH DIVORCE
I have extensive experience witnessing and evaluating couples and families in the divorce process. My joint law and psychology training affords a breadth of understanding and experience in the challenges parents and children face in the divorce process. I have counseled parents and litigants for years in managing and understanding both their own and their children's challenges navigating these harrowing experiences.
I am a PSYPACT authorized provider, offering secure telehealth sessions across 43 states. Wherever you are located, you can work with me from the convenience of your home or office. And if you and your children are in different states, my licensure in Massachusetts and Michigan, as well as 43 state PSYPACT authorization, means I can work with all of you — regardless which of these states you live in.
